While exposure to extreme heat conditions is an everyday occurrence in the life of soldiers, firefighters and emergency personnel, not everybody is aware of some of the less obvious, yet equally lethal, ways in which heat can quickly create a life-threatening situation.
One of the principal sources of danger is the onset of HEAT STROKE - a potentially life threatening condition!!! Heat stroke often occurs when core brain temperature exceeds 104°. However, even a core brain temperature of greater than 101.8° can produce significant Central Nervous System (CNS) dysfunction resulting in:
* Reduced hand/eye coordination
* Impaired cognitive (knowledge and perception) functions
* Loss of appropriate decision making ability
* Impaired short-term memory
All of the above can create an extremely hazardous situation, where the ability to think quickly under pressure is critical both to a person's own survival and the success of his or her mission. Of course, the key is to find a fast, effective way of measuring core brain temperature without impeding performance in any way, yet giving a clear warning sign if heat illness is about to become a factor. The solution is the BodyTemp liquid crystal Thermostrip.
How Does it Work?
A single Thermostrip can be worn for hours allowing continuous monitoring of the child’s temperature while the child is playing or moving around. Additionally, the KidsTemp body temperature measurement strip is much safer than other thermometers because it is unbreakable and contains no hazardous mercury. Currently, the KidsTemp product is the same product sold to other markets but in different packaging. In the future, the company intends to market colorful custom-styled Thermostrip's employing special cartoon characters and youth-oriented graphics.
The SportsTemp and BodyTemp Thermostrips effectively reflects the build up of brain temperature resulting from strenuous activity or excessive thermal exposure by measuring the core temperature of the brain and producing a clear, accurate, easy to read yellow color indicator stripe. The easy-to-use, 2 inch, self adhesive Thermostrip is worn on the forehead or upper chest (if the upper chest is used, then add one degree to the reading, as the Thermostrip is further from the brain).
If during an activity, the Thermostrip indicates a spike in temperature (>102° F), the body may be generating more heat than energy, signaling a too intense level of activity or prolonged exposure to ambient heat and a potential danger of brain over-heating. So by simply reading the yellow line on the Thermostrip, the wearer can take appropriate steps (cooling, fluids, etc) to reduce his/her brain’s heat load.
The BodyTemp Thermostrip takes the guesswork out of knowing if we are nearing the danger zones for heat exhaustion or heat stroke and allows us to safely monitor our core brain temperatures during training, sports or illness.
